inscribed "Lady
Southern Cross 1934. Taken from the wing surface when the long range tanks
were fitted before the flight Australia USA". The inscription includes
a signature thought to be that of A.H. Affleck, a contemporary of Smithy.
Arthur Affleck joined the Civil Aviation Branch of the Australian Defence
Department in 1936 as a Flying Inspector.
